Metropol Parasol

The Metropol Parasol in Seville, Spain, is an iconic landmark of contemporary design that stands out against a backdrop of the Old Quarter’s historic architecture.

Known locally as “Setas de Sevilla” (“Mushrooms of Seville”) for its enormous mushroom-like parasols that were inspired by the vaults of Seville Cathedral, it’s one of the largest wooden structures in the world.

Completed in 2011 as part of an urban renewal project to revitalize the Plaza de la Encarnacion, the Metropol Parasol consists of six large parasols interconnected by walkways that create a sprawling canopy.

Beneath the parasols, the multiuse space houses a traditional market, restaurants and bars. Rooftop terraces offer spectacular panoramic views over the city.

On the basement level is the Antiquarium, a small museum and archaeological site that showcases the ancient Roman and Moorish remains found on the site during the excavation of the plaza. Raised walkways allow visitors to stroll past the remains of streets and houses from different centuries, as well as mosaics, fountains and ceramics.

The Metropol Parasol’s integration of contemporary architecture and historic preservation combined with a unique design that blends medieval inspiration with modern engineering wonderfully captures Seville’s  rich cultural heritage.
