Synonymous with the Netherlands, fields of vibrant tulips in peak bloom are an incredible site to experience during spring. Between mid-March and mid-May, Artisans of Leisure can arrange for travelers on our private Netherlands tours to experience the best of the country’s floral displays, festivals and celebrations.
First introduced to the Netherlands in the 16th century through trade with the Ottoman Empire, tulips were prized by the Dutch elite for their rarity, deeply saturated colors and association with the luxury and refinement of the Far East.
They quickly became a symbol of wealth and status during the Dutch Golden Age (1588-1675), displayed in homes in the distinctive tulipiere, an elaborate vase that showcased each tulip flower.
Representative of the economic and cultural power of the tulip was the infamous Tulip Mania that swept the country between 1633 and 1637, an economic frenzy that resulted in tulip bulbs traded at exorbitant prices (for example, a single bulb was worth the cost of a house).
Closely associated with the prosperity of the Dutch Republic, as well as the individual status of the owner of the tulips, the brilliant blooms became intertwined with national identity. Immortalized in many 17th-century Dutch still life paintings, tulips remained a popular national flower and subject in art long after the Tulip Mania had subsided.
Beyond the aesthetic value of their vibrant colors, Dutch tulips also symbolize the hope and renewal of spring after the winter months. Today, the Netherlands remains the world’s leading producer of tulips, cultivating billions of bulbs annually that play a significant role in the Dutch economy.
Between mid-March and mid-May, we arrange for travelers on our private Netherlands tours to experience the best of the spring season, including seeing the vibrant array of tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and other blooms at the Keukenhof…
…walking or cycling along the expansive technicolor tulip fields in Lisse, and privately touring a tulip farm with a renowned bulb grower based near Amsterdam.
Throughout the year, we also arrange private excursions to one of the largest flower auction houses in the world to see the excitement of live auctions…
Other options include visiting the Amsterdam Tulip Museum to learn more about the Himalayan origins of the flower and the 17th-century Tulip Mania and a private excursion to a family-run tulip farm outside of Amsterdam. Our travelers can experience a behind-the-scenes look at how the family cultivates the iconic flowers, including the modern greenhouses and irrigation systems.
Upon request, we arrange specialty shopping for high-quality Delftware, including tulipieres, as well as private tours of the Royal Delft Factory.
